QUERI is a free desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux. No account, no subscription, and no telemetry. Here is everything it does and what it leaves out.

1. Searching & flipping through pages

In a normal browser, running a search gives you a list of links, and you middle-click five or ten of them into new tabs. QUERI removes the tab bar altogether:

  • Result #1 opens immediately: As soon as you run a web or site search, QUERI parses the results list, pins the numbered list (1 to 20) in the right-hand sidebar, and loads Result #1 in the main view.
  • Arrow-key page turning: Press the right arrow key (→) to load Result #2, or the left arrow key (←) to go back. You can also click any numbered item in the right strip.
  • Background prefetching: While you are reading Result #1, QUERI preconnects and prefetches the HTML of the next result in the background so pressing → feels nearly instant.
  • Time filters: Narrow web searches to the past day, past week, past month, or past year from the toolbar.

2. 14 search modes & 2,000+ sites

Your query stays in the search box when you switch modes, so you can type a topic once and check it across different sources with a single click:

  • Web: DuckDuckGo web results (with automatic Yahoo fallback if DuckDuckGo is rate-limited or unreachable).
  • AI: Short, search-grounded synthesis with numbered citations and verified source links.
  • Videos: Clean YouTube search grid without the home feed, shorts shelf, or comment section.
  • News: Current reporting across news outlets.
  • Pods: Podcast episode search with a built-in audio player so you can listen right inside the app.
  • Wiki: Direct Wikipedia search with up to 20 matching encyclopedic articles in the right strip.
  • Papers: Academic literature via Semantic Scholar.
  • Books: Book lookup by title, topic, or author.
  • PDF: Direct search for PDF documents, manuals, and filings (filetype:pdf), opened in a clean fit-to-width PDF viewer.
  • EDU: University and academic course pages (site:.edu).
  • Discuss: Human forum discussions across Reddit, Hacker News, and StackExchange.
  • Essays: Long-form writing across Substack, Medium, Gwern, and LessWrong.
  • Gov: Official government data, agencies, and public records (site:.gov).
  • Docs: Technical documentation and code across GitHub, StackOverflow, and MDN.
  • 2,000+ individual sites & !bangs: Type !arxiv, !gh, !hn, !reddit, !pubmed, or open the Edit Sites dialog (⌘,) to pin your favorite sites to the left panel. If you search a custom site that QUERI hasn’t seen before, QUERI automatically learns its result link layout and saves the parser locally.

3. Grounded AI answers & the Community AI Jukebox

End any query with a question mark (?), click the ? button in the search bar, or select the AI mode to get a grounded answer:

  • Short answer on Page 0, real sources on Pages 1–10: QUERI uses Google Gemini with Google Search grounding to write 2–5 plain sentences with inline citation numbers [1] [2], up to 4 key takeaways, and 3 suggested follow-up questions.
  • Dead-link filtering: Before showing you the answer, QUERI resolves search redirect URLs, checks that the cited pages actually exist (filtering out 404s and login walls), and caps results to at most 2 links per domain so one website doesn’t dominate the list.
  • 24-hour cache: Repeated questions are served from cache in 0 ms at zero API cost.
  • Community AI Jukebox (no API key or subscription required): Instead of charging a monthly subscription or making you paste your own API key, QUERI uses a shared Community AI Jukebox. Niraj seeds the Jukebox and adds a daily coin every morning. Anyone can optionally drop in $2, $5, or $10—80% refills the shared community pool for everyone, and 20% stays reserved on your computer so you are never locked out even if the public pool runs dry.

4. Two-column Broadsheet Reader (⌘E)

Press ⌘E (or Ctrl+E) on any article to switch into Broadsheet Reader View:

  • Sticky mode: Once you turn Reader View on, it stays on as you press → and ← across search results, formatting each new source into clean print columns until you toggle it off.
  • Newspaper typesetting: Uses Mozilla Readability for extraction plus Knuth-Plass hyphenation and justification (pretext + justif) to lay out articles in two balanced columns on warm paper (or single column on narrower windows).
  • Font scaling & right-click menu: Switch between A−, A, and A+ type sizes. Right-clicking selected text in Reader View lets you search QUERI for that phrase, ask QUERI AI about it, look it up in the system dictionary, copy it as a formatted Markdown blockquote with citation, or copy a deep highlight link.

5. Copying quotes, tables, outlines & PDFs

QUERI includes practical tools for getting information out of a web page and into your notes or documents:

  • Copy as Blockquote with Citation: Select any sentence, right-click, and copy > “Quote…” — [Title](url).
  • Copy Link to Highlight: Creates a standard #:~:text= fragment URL that scrolls directly to and highlights your selected passage when opened in any modern browser.
  • Copy Page Tables as Markdown: Extracts HTML <table> elements from the current page and formats them as clean Markdown tables on your clipboard.
  • Copy Page Outline & Key Links: Extracts all H1–H3 headings and main article links as a structured Markdown summary.
  • Copy Full Article as Markdown: Copies the entire Reader View article (title, byline, URL, and clean paragraphs) as Markdown.
  • Copy AI Context Bundle (copy icon above results): Extracts the readable text of your top search results into a single structured Markdown bundle that you can paste into Claude, ChatGPT, or a local LLM.
  • Export as PDF (⌘S) & Copy Screenshot: Save either the formatted Broadsheet or the live web page as a PDF, or copy a crisp PNG screenshot of the viewport to your clipboard.

6. Ad blocking, Element Zapper & archives

  • Network & cosmetic blocker: Blocks third-party ad networks, tracking pixels, and analytics scripts at the network request layer, and hides cookie-consent banners and newsletter overlays via user stylesheets.
  • Element Zapper: If a site has a custom floating banner or sidebar that gets in your way, open Page Tools → Hide Distracting Element, click the element to remove it, and QUERI remembers that rule for future visits to that domain.
  • Per-site pause & cookie reset: Pause content blocking for a specific domain or clear a site’s cookies and storage in two clicks.
  • Wayback Machine, Archive.today & Translate: Jump to the Internet Archive or Archive.today snapshot of the current URL, or translate any foreign-language page to English in-place.

7. Video, audio & read-aloud tools

  • Read Aloud (Text-to-Speech): Have QUERI read the current article aloud at 1×, 1.25×, or 1.5× speed.
  • Picture-in-Picture & playback speed: Pop any playing video into a floating Picture-in-Picture window or set video/audio speed from 1× up to 2×.

8. Collections, local storage & Compact Mode

  • Calm Web Collections: Hand-picked, finite reading lists on the home screen for when you want to read something worthwhile without an algorithmic feed.
  • 100% local history & bookmarks: Your saved pages (⌘J), visited history (⌘Y), recent queries, and custom sites are stored in plain JSON/local storage on your own computer.
  • Compact Mode (⌘⇧K or Menu Bar icon): Shrinks QUERI into a narrow companion window that floats over your text editor or notes app.
  • queri:// protocol links: Trigger searches from Raycast, Alfred, Apple Shortcuts, or shell scripts using queri://search?q=your+query.

10. What QUERI does not do

QUERI is intentionally built for looking things up and reading, not for running your whole digital life:

  • It does not have tabs, tab groups, or a bookmarks bar.
  • It does not have browser extensions or a password manager.
  • It is not a multi-turn AI chat workspace.
  • Whenever a page belongs in your full web browser (such as email, docs, or online shopping), press ⌘O and it opens in your default browser immediately.
